Mercedes Schlapp is not the White House's strategist communications adviser. The White House's strategic communications advisor Mercedes Schlapp is required to face a variety of challenges. This includes a president who also has his own director of communications as well as numerous legal issues that could disrupt the messaging strategy. Schlapp is, however, maintained her focus on her mission. She works closely in conjunction with White House political affairs and legislative teams and policy shops and the overall communications operation in order to coordinate the policy roll-out. So far, her focus has been on matters such as school safety, opioids, infrastructure, and trade. Schlapp doesn't deal with reporters much in her current role. In March, she gained a sudden burst media attention when it was public that her name was going to be a candidate for take over Hope Hicks's position as the director of communication. Mercedes Schlapp has a tough task in her position as the White House's strategist for communications. She's faced with the president, who acts as his own communications director, multiple legal battles that could sabotage the administration's messaging strategy as well as a host of Cabinet secretaries embroiled in their own controversy. Schlapp never wavered from her mission, and has collaborated closely with White House policy and political teams. So far, her primary focus has been on topics such as safety in schools as well as the opioid epidemic infrastructure, trade, along with other issues. As of now she doesn't deal too much with journalists. In March, she garnered some media attention when her name was mentioned as a potential candidate for the job of succeeding Hope Hicks in the role as communications director. The fight turned ugly. The allies of Schlapp and Tony Sayegh, another contender for the job have been fighting over the media. Schlapp stated to that the Washington Examiner that she spoke to Sayegh to discuss the recent article that was negative about him.
